Ultrasonic level transmitters are non-contact instruments that measure the distance to a liquid or solid surface by emitting sound waves. They work by emitting high-frequency ultrasonic pulses from a transducer mounted above the material. The sensor then measures the time it takes for the echo to return. Using the known speed of sound in air, the device can calculate the distance to the surface and subsequently the level within the tank, vessel or silo. Key advantages include their non-intrusive nature (they make no contact with the process medium), their suitability for a wide range of fluids and bulk solids, their ease of installation, and their minimal maintenance requirements. Ultrasonic level transmitters are widely used in the water/wastewater, chemical processing, food and beverage, and power industries, where reliable, continuous level monitoring is essential. However, performance can be affected by heavy foam, vapour, dust, or extreme turbulence.
