Ultrasonic level transmitters are non-contact instruments that measure the distance to a liquid or solid surface using sound waves. The operation of the equipment involves the emission of high-frequency ultrasonic pulses from a transducer (horn) mounted above the material. The sensor then measures the time it takes for the echo to return. Utilising the speed of sound in the air, the device calculates the distance to the surface and, consequently, the level within the tank, vessel, or silo. Key advantages include their non-intrusive nature (no contact with the process medium), suitability for a wide range of fluids and bulk solids, ease of installation, and minimal maintenance requirements. These devices are employed in a variety of industries, including water/wastewater, chemical processing, food and beverage, and power, among others, where reliable, continuous level monitoring is paramount. Performance may be impacted by heavy foam, vapour, dust, or extreme turbulence.
